Offspring: “You know what I don’t like about Sam’s?”
Me: “What’s that, bud?”
Offspring: “No one looks happy to be here.”
Me: “That is very true.”
I don’t know what exactly it is about Sam’s and the Walton Empire in general. Maybe it’s the lowest price mentality, the fact that they don’t really pay people squat, or the ghosts of all the mom and pop shops that have been killed off over the years. Whatever it is, people don’t look happy there and even my happy-go-lucky ten year old spotted it within 5 minutes of being in the store.
We once had a Sam’s club membership, and we even kept it for a year after Costco came to town and we signed up there. Eventually tho, we gravitated towards Costco. I’d read articles about their CEO and his philosophy on employees. ‘Turns out it’s cheaper in the long run to pay and treat people well than keep retraining newbie employees in the endless revolving door of employment that is Walmart. I liked that idea and so I decided that was where I wanted my money to go.
