We made a lot of changes after the Offspring came along. Every parent does. As he’s gotten older, we’ve made other changes as well. It’s kind of like boxing; you adapt or get knocked out.
One of the best things we did was decide to pick him up from school ourselves so we can do his homework with him. This has given us a leg up two ways:
1) Much better performance in school – at first, when the homework began and school began to transition from learning disguised as fun to, well, less fun, it was a little bit of a struggle. he stayed with family in the afternoons so I could get a bit more work done. We decided that it was worth it to sacrifice a couple of hours of work in the afternoon so we could invest in him and haven’t regretted it. We were and are very fortunate. Not everyone can do this to the extent we do, but it has made such a difference for us.
2) More time later in the evening to spend as a family – Where it was hurried and stressed, it’s much more relaxed. Yeah, we have our rough nights, but we still do as much together as we possibly can. Lisa calls us the Three Musketeers because we’re together all the time. We see that as a good thing.
He’s a wicked sharp kid. So freakin’ smart. I know, we all say that about our kids and it may just be personal parental bias, but he is so much smarter that I was at his age. He picks up stuff so fast. Yeah, he has to work at some things and I’m there to encourage & be the slave driver when appropriate. He may not love it all the time now, but hopefully he’ll look back on this and know that the old man loved him.
