He knew the Beta Club induction was coming. Someone at the school had let that slip. He was unsure if he was going to be invited to join, so he would just allude to the existence of Beta Club and muse out loud about the requirements for admission.
We had gotten the email, but kept quiet about it. It wasn’t until a few days before when he said an email was supposed to be sent out, and I was forced to lie straight to his face without flinching.
So convinced was he of his lack of qualification that he didn’t even check the bleachers to see if we were there. He was resigned to his fate, until —
“Hey, Connor, I think your parents are here.”
This picture above and that look on his face was worth all the deception. I’ll always carry this image of him in my head.
